How easy it is to solve problems from the sidelines. To sit in that metaphorical armchair and hurl abuses and criticisms against the decision maker.

The latest public utterance in this respect recently came from former Cape Breton Regional Municipality councillor Vince Hall in his demand that Mayor Amanda McDougall-Merrill should resign over what he regards as her failure to properly negotiate provincial government funding for the CBRM. It’s never, even in part, because of poor choices we might have made but more to the point, it’s never our responsibility to seek and find new ones. No, that might take some work, some insight, the pursuit of new and novel approaches and, perhaps even, the courage to fail in doing so.Why not?Well, of course, because they’re screwing us and denying us our fair share. What a politically convenient pathway to electoral success.

More tellingly, perhaps Hall should tell us how he would approach such negotiations and what he would be seeking. However, that’s not how we have grown accustomed to the practice of politics is it? It’s all about playing the role; all about making noise and shedding little, if any, light. There is no question that funding for this municipality is the central issue for its government. Well then, let’s bring forth some ideas that go beyond the send us a bigger cheque argument.
