DARTMOUTH, N.S. — A gloomy summer got worse for fish and chips fans on Tuesday, with word that Dartmouth institution John’s Lunch will be going out of ...
“I don’t know if I’d say I saw it coming, but it seemed like an eventuality when Pleasant Street Diner opened,” said Chronicle Herald Retales columnist Arthur Gaudreau. “The owners of Pleasant Street Diner were once co-owners of John’s Lunch. The owners separated, I don’t know what the back story was, but it was something about how they wanted to progress, and the succession planning, and all that.
Former John's Lunch co-owner Fotus Fatouros, who moved on to open the Pleasant Street Diner in 2017, holds a seafood platter at John's Lunch on Feb. 26, 2013. - Peter Parsons Gaudreau said he hasn’t heard what is to become of the property, site of the restaurant that attracted families for more than five decades.
“It’s one of those things where their grandparents went, and then their parents went, and then they took the kids, it was multigenerational, this is where we go for fish and chips,” he said. “Then, when they got that little bump in Reader’s Digest about 15 or 20 years ago about being the best fish and chips in Canada, I think that’s why there was such an attachment to it. And, on Good Friday, they were always incredibly busy.”“When I was a kid, I went a lot,” he said.
