“To get an opportunity to bring your team to this level, where you are playing the best seven teams across the country, is a great opportunity for growth for your program for sure.”
UPEI Panthers head coach Darrell Glenn talks to the team during a timeout in an Atlantic University Sport men’s basketball game at the Chi-Wan Young Sports Centre at UPEI earlier this season. Glenn, in his sixth year coaching the Panthers, has guided the Panthers to the U Sports men’s national basketball championship in Halifax this weekend. - Janessa Hogan/UPEI AthleticsCHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. — Coaching is much more than Xs and Os for Darrell Glenn.
“To get an opportunity to bring your team to this level, where you are playing the best seven teams across the country, is a great opportunity for growth for your program for sure,” said Glenn. “We are going to benefit from this regardless of how it goes.“As a proud alumnus …, one of the things I wanted to do coming back here was try to get our program back on the map. When I played here, we were a very good program and consistently in the top-10. I want to help us get back to that point.
There was also an adjustment period for Glenn, as he needed to get reacquainted with the AUS following his return to UPEI. “The big thing was we went 3-17 that year, but we were way more competitive in games,” said Glenn. “The culture, the day-to-day stuff we were doing, the way the guys were competing, the way they were working together and their commitment to getting better, I felt at the end of that third year we found the pieces we can start to build with.”
“I’m pleased with the direction we are moving in but far from satisfied,” said Glenn. “I still think this team has another level it can get to.” That passion extends well beyond the basketball court. Miller and Glenn have had numerous discussions about the direction of the program over the years.
