The Saskatchewan Roughriders can’t simply say they’re going to be the “least-penalized but most physical” team this season in the CFL.

There might be the rub — Dickenson is such a nice guy that he doesn’t scare them out of misbehaving. The consequences haven’t been severe. Do you think Chris Jones, Wally Buono, Don Matthews or Mike O’Shea, some of this league’s best coaches, let undisciplined play go unpunished?

Destructive behaviour can’t be tolerated by a team vying for respectability, a playoff berth and its first championship in a decade. So throughout this preseason and training camp Dickenson has reportedly been talking to his players about “core values … discipline … patience … culture.” He told them it’s a privilege to play for the community-owned Roughriders and discussed the history of the 113-year-old franchise.

They simply can’t afford to surrender 84.2 yards on 9.6 penalties — last year’s per-game average — or even take seven penalties for 88 yards, as they did while beating the B.C. Lions 30-27 in last week’s meaningless preseason game. Two of those penalties occurred on one play, when a pair of offensive linemen took umbrage with a dirty hit on Riders quarterback Shea Patterson and pummelled the culprit. Admirable in one way, yes, but fool-headed and costly in another.
