A real Bible thumper.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT Daredevil’s recent resurrection has a hidden Biblical meaning that fans may not recognize – as seen in Daredevil #1, Matt Murdoch's return to the land of the living has its roots in an obscure story from the Bible. The relaunched series opens with Matt living as a Catholic priest, seemingly with no memory his descent into hell, with his story paralleling a Biblical narrative.
Daredevil #1 – written by Saladin Ahmed, drawn by Aaron Kuder, colored by Jesus Aburtov and lettered by Clayton Cowles – features Elektra finding Matt working as a priest at a youth shelter in Hell's Kitchen. She recounts the events of the past few months, wondering how he managed to return to life; meanwhile, Matt begins to realize that his Daredevil days are not behind him.Daredevil's Faith Has Been Tested Many Times Before In Daredevil #1, Elektra, operating as Daredevil, learns of Matt’s return and visits him.
Daredevil's Recent Story Arc Is Truly Biblical Elektra is right – Matt Murdock did appear to sacrifice himself to save the souls of his friends. Prior to that, Daredevil formed the Fist, a group of warriors intended to end the menace of the Hand once and for all. Leading the group tested Daredevil’s faith like never before; he struggled to reconcile the lethal nature of his mission with his faith. Daredevil’s plan backfired, and he learned many of his friends were now prisoners of the Hand.
The Harrowing of Hell is set between Jesus’ crucifixion and his resurrection. According to the story, Jesus descended into the underworld to liberate the souls stuck there; since these souls existed before Jesus’ sacrifice, they lived in a state of non-grace. Jesus brought them to their final reward, before returning to life. In Daredevil #1, Matt is a far cry from the broken and nearly defeated Daredevil readers saw previously; Daredevil has returned as a more ideal version of himself.
