If you were out and about today, you may have noticed a lot of people wearing colorful socks.
People across our area today are joining the movement to be kind and to be inclusive. And they’re doing it one sock at a time.“We’ve had our branch since 2018. And one thing that we have always focused on is wanting to make a place for every student. Every student that goes to Daphne High School is special in their own way,” Kat Robinson said.
The National Down Syndrome Society celebrates this day on 3-21 to represent the extra 21st chromosome that people with Down syndrome have.“It’s really nice to have that school spirit. We really like to say here in Daphne that it’s one Daphne, one family. And seeing us all come together and wearing our mismatched socks for one organization and one common cause, I feel like it really creates that unity that we’re looking for in schools,” Riley Mellett said.
“Our gym manager in our gym up in Robertsdale, his son has Down syndrome. We babysit him a lot. So, he’s kind of like family to us. This just really means a lot to us,” Shayne Bodalia said. The goal was to show that people with Down syndrome have individual identities, interests, likes and dislikes, gifts, and talents, just like everyone else.“One of my biggest players. He’s probably 6′4, 330 and he had Hello Kitty socks on today. So, I can definitely say those were the best socks today,” Head Coach Kenny King said.“And that’s important work. We’re not going to change the world in one day, but it’s important to start and this is a great opportunity to do that,” Robinson said.
You could also wear blue and yellow today. Those are the colors used to raise awareness for Down syndrome.
