A windfall for FIFA, adding more teams, more matches in \u002726 can only add to host city costs. And for what? Games that few may want to watch.
Now, everyone is on tenterhooks waiting to hear how the entitled autocrats at the soccer world’s governing body decide to dole out the best and worst games and how many to each of the host cities. Because any additional matches will cost additional money.
The best hope was that Canada would be playing a match here. Of course, that’s also the best hope of Toronto — Canada’s other host city.Article content Forget for a moment the high potential for the Cup boring people to distraction. This is a money grab pure and simple. Maybe it’s still only five. Maybe it’s 10? But for now, the city is continuing to operate on the assumption that it will be only five.Yeah, thanks, FIFA. In addition to the contingency, those incremental costs for five games are: Security ; the required fan festival ; host city administration and volunteer services ; traffic and stadium zone “management and services” ; “decoration and brand protection obligations” ; and insurance .
