The Washington Nationals are hiring Danny Haas to be the team’s next scouting director, a person familiar with the situation told The Washington Post on Friday. Haas, 47, spent the past five seasons with the Arizona Diamondbacks as a special assignment scout. He began his career in 2002 as an amateur scout for the Boston Red Sox, who drafted him in 1997, and spent 10 seasons with Boston before the Baltimore Orioles hired him after the 2011 season. He worked in Baltimore for seven seasons before joining the Diamondbacks.

The Nationals’ scouting department will look drastically different next season, especially at the top. Johnny DiPuglia, Washington’s international scouting director,for next season. Then, Kline transitioned to a new role. He remains on staff as a scout on the pro side.Kline was responsible for drafting Stephen Strasburg, Bryce Harper and Anthony Rendon, but the Nationals have struggled to find and develop through the draft since.

Rizzo told reporters a few weeks ago that he would look both internally and externally to replace Kline and DiPuglia. Fausto Severino, who worked under DiPuglia, isAnd though Rizzo has familiarity with the Diamondbacks from his time as a scouting director from 2000 to 2006, he has never worked with Haas.

Haas will bring a fresh set of eyes to Washington, and comes from an organization that has reached the National League Division Series this year. The Diamondbacks will meet the Los Angeles Dodgers in the NLDS, with Game 1 set for Saturday night.
