A pause to the provincial fuel tax, a rebate on electricity bills, and indexing of support programs to inflation were among the measures revealed Tuesday night by the Alberta premier, whose government has a substantial surplus to work with.
Albertans won’t see the province do what it did in 2006 under Premier Ralph Klein — when three million people got a one-time $400 “prosperity” payout — despite some hypothesizing to the contrary on social media this week.
During a televised prime-time address Tuesday evening, Smith told the province that over the next six months — the period before the next provincial election — she would be doling out dollars for families and those on various income-support programs. The premier did not take questions from reporters after her remarks.
The provincial fuel tax will be waived for the next six months and there will be a rebate on electricity bills — set to jump through the winter months — reaching a total of $200 per household. What’s more, those two programs, along with the seniors benefit and the Alberta child and family benefit, will be indexed for inflation starting in January. The province will also invest in food banks and expand low-income transit passes, said Smith.
