Daniel Ricciardo returns to Red Bull Racing in reserve role.
For the first eight years of his Formula 1 career, Daniel Ricciardo was a Red Bull driver. He developed through their system, first as a satellite driver for other teams and then as a second driver for the senior team, before finally taking the lead role at the program when Sebastian Vettel left for Ferrari in 2015. That lasted a year and just four races; Max Verstappen's quick promotion to the team led to a quick demotion to second priority for Ricciardo and, by 2018, led him to.
Officially, Ricciardo is being listed as the"third driver" of Red Bull's senior team. He has no plans to actually race for the team in 2022, but is confirmed forover the course of the 2023 season. Many components of the role are ceremonial, but the testing and sim roles are major parts of car development.
While the role seems like a clear demotion from a race seat at a smaller team, let alone a race seat at Red Bull, Ricciardo has a clear path back to F1 after the 2023 season. Back in 2021, former Red Bull driver Alex Albon was cast into a similar role to make room at the senior team for Sergio Perez. Albon spent the season racing part time in the GT3-based remnants of what was once the DTM between races where he had reserve driver duties.
That seems like an unlikely path for Ricciardo, who expressed disinterest in racing for either Haas or Williams this offseason. A role could open up at a bigger team at any time, however, and
