Kentucky Attorney General Daniel Cameron holds a sizable lead ahead of the rest of the Republican field before the gubernatorial primary in the Bluegrass State on Tuesday.
A poll from Emerson College Polling/Fox 56 Lexington conducted between Wednesday and Friday shows Cameron leading former Ambassador to the United Nations Kelly Craft by more than 15%.The survey shows Cameron with 33%, Craft with 17.6%, and state Agriculture Commissioner Ryan Quarles with 13.2%. None of the other candidates received more than 10%, and 12.8% of those polled remain undecided.
The pollsters note that Cameron, who was endorsed by former President Donald Trump, was boosted by his backing, with most GOP voters saying the nod from Trump influenced whom they would support. “The Trump endorsement’s impact has increased since last month: 48% of Republican voters say Trump’s endorsement of a candidate makes them more likely to vote for that candidate. Forty-one percent say it makes no difference on their vote, and 12% find it makes them less likely to support a candidate,” Spencer Kimball, the executive director of Emerson College Polling, said in a statement.
The poll also shows Trump holding a significant lead in the 2024 GOP presidential primary in Kentucky, leading Gov. Ron DeSantis 70%-14%.The winner of the GOP primary will likely battle incumbent Gov. Andy Beshear , who is facing little competition in the Democratic primary, in November. The top contenders on the Republican side have campaigned on some of the state's most pivotal matters, including transgender issues and gun violence.
The polls for the Kentucky gubernatorial primary are open from 6 a.m.-6 p.m. local time on Tuesday, with the general election in the gubernatorial race slated for Nov. 7, 2023.
