Comstock Middle School in southeast Dallas began accepting voters three or four hours later than its scheduled 7 a.m. opening, according to Dallas' city...
This comes two years after Dallas city officials complained of broken voting machines, a lack of electrical outlets and extension cords, and other issues at 10 Dallas voting locations in the May 2021 elections, causing opening delays at all but one polling site.
The middle school is in District 5, which covers most of Pleasant Grove. County data shows 33 people voted at the site on Election Day. Incumbent council member Jaime Resendez won almost 54% of the about 1,600 votes cast in the district over challengers Terry Perkins and Yolanda Faye Williams . Johnson said the county is considering using county staff to work at some polling locations or hiring temp workers to help prevent training-related issues. Other than the issues at a few polling locations, she said she thought the elections overall ran smoothly.Michael Scarpello, Dallas County’s elections administrator, confirmed a delayed opening with at least one site, but said he couldn’t immediately recall where it was or any other locations where there were issues.
Scarpello described any other site issues during the May 6 election as “minor” and that “there’s always various, miscellaneous opening issues in any election.” “It was an excellent election, and we had very little problems,” he said. “We’ve implemented new things over the last two years that have proven to make the election process much smoother, not only for voters but for poll workers and the county election staff.”
