Dallas judge who oversees DWI court blames her drunk driving case on car, cop and ailment | Opinion
A three-judge review panel has dismissed a public admonition issued last summer against Dallas County misdemeanor court Judge Audrey Moorehead after she was indicted on a drunken driving charge.
Moorehead, who is serving a one-year probation sentence in the case, admitted to a panel appointed by the chief justice of the Texas Supreme Court that on Dec. 8, 2020, she drank vodka at a restaurant while watching a football game. And she admitted that shortly after, she lost control of the Cadillac she was driving. It jumped a median and hit a light pole in Farmers Branch. Thankfully no other car was involved and no one was hurt.
She admitted to the panel she had a one-car accident. But she said she lost control of her new and “extremely technologically advanced” car after its lane correction, auto acceleration and braking functions engaged as she tried to avoid an oncoming car. Finally, Moorehead, who presides over the misdemeanor DWI specialty court for Dallas County, said she felt compelled to take a plea deal because the commission deviated from its standard procedure and publicly admonished her before she could go to trial. Essentially “a finding of guilt” was already “in the public arena,” she told the panel.
