“If people are doing more shifts than they’d like, that leads to burn out,” County Judge Clay Lewis Jenkins said.“Some people love working,” Price said. “They volunteer, because they’re getting paid.”The county says 322 guards are 55 or older this year. Almost the same number of detention officers — 327 guards — are 30 or younger this year. Sommerman said the county should prepare for a large portion of its guards to retire within the next decade.
Lewis Jenkins said that Dallas County has “the 80 rule,” which means when someone’s years of county service plus their age equals 80, they can retire with full benefits. Those who were hired at the age of 20 could retire at 50.According to county data, 50 guards — almost 4% — are or have already turned 65 this year.
The sheriff is also considering making changes to the job, like replacing 12-hour shifts with 10-hour shifts. Sommerman joined the commissioners court in January and has since toured the jail. Following his tour, he has made it a priority to recruit more young people.
