Sommerman, who is newly appointed to represent commissioners on the juvenile board, said in the meeting that the court needs more information from the juvenile department to adequately address concerns.that his requests for observation sheets have been denied three times, even when he agreed that the minors’ names could be redacted. Sommerman said he wants the county to fund positions for enough guards to adequately monitor the children.
As he adjourned the open meeting into executive session, Judge Clay Jenkins shook his head in exasperation. Commissioners met following public comment to discuss whether the court has the authority to require a department to turn over such information.Commissioner John Wiley Price opposed the decision, saying the court did not have the authority to order that the observation sheets be shared. He said later in an interview that the Commissioners Court only has budgetary authority.
Price blamed the DA’s office for the amount of time Aleman’s child was locked up. He said attorneys are always pushing back court dates.
