Polling places have been open for weeks in California, and the massive turnout for the 2020 presidential election appears to be squarely in the rearview.
If any candidate gets 50% of the vote in the primary, he or she will be the City of Angels’ next chief executive. A more likely result this week is a runoff election in November.‘s Trevor Noah broke down the mayoral tilt on his Comedy Central late-night show Monday as part of its ongoing “Votedemic 2022” coverage. He noted that Bass has the full support of the Democratic Party and “for much of the campaign, she had a clear lead in the polls.
Noah played a clip of Caruso saying, “I really want to reinvent the Democratic Party to go back to what it was, I think, 30 years ago.” The host returned: “Can I ask you an honest question? Why do so many politicians want to go back in time and never forward?” After a few more lines of comedy about MAGA, etc., he returned to the subject at hand. “But I’m not surprised wants to go back 30 years, though. Remember, he makes malls. Thirty years ago was a great time for mall developers.”
Noah went on to note that Caruso has been flooding the airwaves with ads — costing nearly $40 million, the most spent on any race in the country — while Bass and other candidates have “spent very little.” While the candidate’s ads have focused on hot-button issues of crime and homelessness, Noah notes that “Caruso has also brought out the one thing people in L.A. trust more than anything else: celebrities.”Watch the segment above.
