Students throughout the Washington region have reported finding antisemitic graffiti on lockers, desktops, in bathrooms, hallways and on the asphalt of parking lots and basketball courts. Still, schools can address only the incidents they’re aware of. Chatter in hallways and online can often include insensitive remarks, and students say they’ve felt most vulnerable in those places since the current Israel-Gaza conflict erupted. On Oct. 20, a student at Chevy Chase Elementary in Montgomery reported finding “two swastikas, inappropriate words and a person shooting two guns” drawn on the boys bathroom wall and stall door, according to a letter from the school’s principal.
Some of the student organizers cited worries about complaints from parents and community members. One Palestinian junior, who spoke on the condition of anonymity out of safety concerns, said she’s worried that students are being labeled as antisemitic just for sharing stories of being Palestinian. The student said that, until the walkout, she had felt little support at school.
In the days after the Oct. 7 attack, Fairfax Superintendent Michelle Reid held meetings with both Jewish and Palestinian student leaders from throughout the district to hear their concerns and find ways that the district could support students. In Montgomery County, students from Whitman’s Jewish Student Union and Muslim Student Association quickly put out a statement on social media.
