Cy Falls, which won District 16-6A, actually outshot DeSoto from the field in the loss.

But while DeSoto was able to score from the free-throw line, Cypress Falls didn’t find success anywhere on the floor. Now it’s heading home after falling 34-30 at Lufkin ISD’s Panther Activity Center in the Class 6A Region II semifinals.“We couldn’t score,” Cy Falls coach Richard Flores said. “We really struggled to score in certain moments throughout the year – and was one of those.”

DeSoto , No. 16 in the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches 6A rankings, advanced to face Klein Oak or Mansfield Legacy at noon Saturday in the regional finals. No. 25 Cy Falls ended its season at 28-8.The Houston-area’s Eagles hit 12 of 36 field goals to finish with 33.3% shooting. DeSoto made only 10 of 31 shots for 32.3% shooting. But DeSoto went 12-of-19 from the free-throw line, and Cy Falls was only 4-of-7 – and 0-of-3 in the first half.

Cy Falls led 4-0 early on baskets by Joseph Tugler and Daylon Porter. Then DeSoto reeled off a 7-0 run to take control. Cy Falls reclaimed the lead on a driving layup by Porter to start the second quarter before a 6-0 DeSoto run that gave it a 20-12 halftime lead. Two 3-pointers by Arrington Cooper were the difference.

Porter helped Cy Falls again pull even in the second half. His 3 at the end of the third trimmed the deficit to 23-21, and his free throws to start the fourth tied it 23-23. But another DeSoto run secured a 29-23 lead with 5:26 remaining, and Tugler’s late rally – including an offensive putback of his own missed dunk – wasn’t enough.

“They did a really good job defensively, over-helping and forcing our guards to attempt a shot,” Flores said.Tugler generated 10 points, eight rebounds, two steals and two blocks for Cy Falls, which outrebounded DeSoto 31-20.
