Finlay emphasizes that the current political climate, with a rapidly approaching deadline and the involvement of multiple organizations, creates an ideal scenario for malicious actors.
He explains that successful cyberattacks often exploit vulnerabilities within human behavior and processes. Campaigns, operating under immense pressure and limited resources, may lack the time for comprehensive cybersecurity training and implementation of robust security protocols. This, coupled with the potential use of personal devices and cloud-based services, increases the risk of falling victim to sophisticated phishing attacks, where attackers impersonate trusted individuals to steal sensitive information or introduce malware.Finlay draws parallels to the 2016 U.S. presidential election, where Russian hackers successfully used spear-phishing tactics to target Hillary Clinton's campaign, despite its well-established infrastructure and financial resources. He stresses the importance of safeguarding voter lists, which could be exploited for further phishing attempts and disinformation campaigns. Finlay recommends several proactive measures, including heightened awareness among campaign workers, strict protocols for handling sensitive information, and the adoption of two-factor authentication. He also urges Liberal Party of Canada supporters to remain vigilant against suspicious communications and verify information through official channels. Finlay concludes by calling for collaborative efforts from the federal government and the private sector to provide necessary support and expertise to the campaign teams. While the Security and Intelligence Threats to Elections (SITE) Task Force will be monitoring the race, he emphasizes the need for practical on-the-ground assistance. He suggests that companies with cybersecurity expertise, such as Microsoft, could offer pro bono support to help mitigate risks and ensure the integrity of the leadership contest
