EDITORIAL: Reasonable engagement and pragmatic problem-solving without pointless politicking are what’s required from County Council to resolve the jail-siting issue.

A rendering shows how Cuyahoga County Executive Chris Ronayne wants to use 72.1 acres in Garfield Heights to create a "Cuyahoga County Central Services Campus," built around a new jail. The plan was shared during a Cuyahoga County Council Committee of the Whole meeting on July 6, 2023.

At council’s July 6 meeting, alluding to candidate Ronayne’s request that council slow its headlong rush into a mistake, District 11 council member Sunny Simon shot back: “Now we’re being asked to rush, with urgency, and apparently not to look at other locations that could appropriately handle a campus site.”First, it’s even more urgent now to find an appropriate, workable and safe site for a new jail, and for council and the executive to agree on financing.

For his part, County Council President Pernel Jones Jr. groused that the estimated $38.7 million purchase price for the 72.1-acre Garfield Heights parcel was giving him “sticker shock,” and said, “I can’t buy into a vision.”
