When we look back on the past 155 years we see a spotty history of promises, failures and outright attempts to erase us completely.

Chief Little Pine, along with Chief Big Bear, met with government officials. Both chiefs had held out for a better deal following the treaty signings in 1876. Big Bear still refused, but one of his headmen, Lucky Man, signed on behalf of a group that needed assistance and didn’t think they could survive.

They remained in Montana for about six months before returning to Canada. Lucky Man would remain at Great Falls and never return to Canada. In the south, Indigenous people became a source of horses for the early settlers. Some destitute families found themselves at the receiving end of gifts of food and still others received doctoring from local medicine people.Article content

The link between the First Nations and the settlers is much closer than many people think. While we were supposed to be restricted to the reserves, our people broke that rule at every opportunity. In Canada, we went the other way and adopted multiculturalism where national origins were celebrated and allowed to be woven into the fabric of the nation.
