Wearing Canadian colours, competing for a world championship in front of a home\u002Dcountry crowd … the importance of the heart\u002Dswelling moments ahead is not lost…

Asked what he could draw on from past experiences, Gushue said: “Focus on the gratitude and the opportunity you have to play in front of a home crowd that’s all going to be cheering for you and enjoy that moment, as opposed to focusing on the pressure of playing at home and having the expectations of trying to win.

The Harnden brothers have been to worlds before. In 2013, they were part of Brad Jacobs’ Northern Ontario rink, which won a silver medal playing on home ice in Victoria. After joining Gushue as the fifth for last year’s worlds, E.J. Harnden joined the veteran skip’s team full-time ahead of this competitive season.

“We were a bit of a deer in the headlights at that first worlds, being quite new onto the scene,” Ryan Harnden said. “We had some ups and downs. I think that prepared us very well for Sochi . Even though the Olympics is a bit of a different beast, having that international experience opened our eyes of how much pressure there in wearing that Canadian flag. The expectations are big.
