The government is due to announce whether it will approve the UK's first new coal mine for 30 years.
The UK has a target to cut its greenhouse gas emissions -In order to meet this goal, emissions generated by the steel industry must be cut: in 2019 steel production was responsible for 12 million tonnes of carbon dioxide, or 2.7% of the country's total GHG emissions.
The UKCCC says if steel firms don't stop burning coal by 2035, they will have to use expensive technology to capture the emissions generated and bury them underground.Steel-making is problematic because it uses so much coal. But firms are trying to expand the role of cleaner technologies. Electric arc furnaces can help reduce emissions by using electricity to melt scrap steel, which reduces the coal input and the amount of fossil fuels needed for heat production.
It is also possible to use hydrogen in the process instead of iron, which can reduce emissions further - by 61% from 1.8 tonnes of carbon dioxide per tonne of steel to 0.7 tonnes,
