Cumberland County commissioner candidates met Thursday in a Q-&-A with the PennLive editorial board. DAN GLEITER, The Patriot-News THE PATRIOT-NEWSThe race for three Cumberland County commissioner seats has taken on less of a partisan feel this year since the nominees from the majority Republican Party, five-term incumbent Gary Eichelberger and County Treasurer Kelly Neiderer, were part of different tickets in the primary and have opted not to run as a team this fall.

Republican Neiderer and Democrat Smith were the most clear about a maintaining future commitment to downtown Carlisle. Eichelberger signalled he is more open to new building, in part because of what the projected growth the county is up against. “I don’t think you can rule out anything right now,” he said. “We need to be pretty open-minded, and like a lot of things, we need to think a little more entrepreneurially and a little less bureaucratically.”

Neiderer, who is much closer to Republican members in Cumberland’s current legislative delegation than Eichelberger, who ran in this year’s primary without the county Republican committee’s endorsement, said that might be more of an Eichelberger program. Smith pointed to his recent work, without a title, in working to get a network of walking trails established to help connect different communities in the sprawling suburbs of Hampden Township, where he resides.

While agreeing with Eichelberger that accountability to taxpayers is always paramount, Neiderer said she’s just as interested in a bringing a “culture change” to the commissioners office.
