Sitting ninth in CJHL standings, Cubs ready to close out 2022 this week

Ranked ninth in the country by the Canadian Junior Hockey League, the Greater Sudbury Cubs are looking to close out 2022 on a winning note this week.

“The Greater Sudbury Cubs remain as the top team in the NOJHL and a Top 10 team in the country by virtue of their one-win, one-loss performance last week,” the team said in a news release this week. Unfortunately, the team’s nine-game winning streak came to an end on Dec. 15 when they lost 4-1 to the Espanola Paper Kings, but the Cubs bounced back and stopped the French River Rapids 4-1 the next evening.The Cubs travel to Powassan on Wednesday and will return home on Thursday night to host the Voodoos at the Gerry McCrory Countryside Sports Complex. Game time is 7:05 p.m.

The Cubs have been without one of their star forwards for the past two weeks as Sam Assinewai was playing for the Hockey Canada East team in the World Junior ‘A’ Challenge Cup. Assinewai won a silver medal after the team dropped a Assinewai will be recognized at the start of Thursday’s game for being the NOJHL’s sole representative at the international event in Cornwall.
