Lawrence Market North building will host its first Saturday Farmers’ Market since undergoing a multi-year redevelopment.The soft launched event comes ahead of the building’s official grand opening scheduled for May 10.The official return of the Saturday market, the north building arrives after years of construction, delays and hefty budget increases.Originally projected to cost just under $92 million, the project’s final forecast has now reached more than $128 million.City officials say the overhaul was necessary to unlock the underused building’s “full potential” that also includes a newly renovated courtroomConstruction at 92 Front Street began in July 2019 after City Council approved the contract to The Buttcon Limited/The Atlas Corporation Joint Venture.Despite setbacks, officials say the new building will “improve the utility" of the St. Lawrence Market Complex which also includes a brand new open office space.The St. Lawrence Market itself has been a fixture of Toronto life since first being established in 1803 and remains one of the city’s most recognized and historically significant neighbourhoods.
