UVic hosts Winnipeg on Friday night
Diego Maffia, the missile-launching University of Victoria Vikes shooting guard named the Canada West MVP, is taking nothing for granted tonight when the Vikes meet the Winnipeg Wesman in the conference final on Ken and Kathy Shields Court in CARSA gym.
The Vikes are the top seed in Canada West and ranked No. 2 nationally in U Sports and beat UBC in the cross-strait conference semifinal match-up last weekend. The upstart Wesmen upset the Canada West second-seed Manitoba Bisons last week in their cross-town conference semifinal. What’s remarkable is that he has become conference MVP in just his third season after serving as understudy to the graduated standout Vikes all-Canadian point-guard Scott Kellum.
Maffia is evolving into a multi-layered player beyond just being a shooter, something he had to grow into this season when Kellum graduated after last season. The biggest adjustment was taking over Kellum’s ball-controlling duties. Canada West gets two berths into the U Sports national championship tournament next week in Halifax with the Vikes and Wesmen both assured of advancing.
