The P.E.I. Crown Attorney's office has filed a notice to appeal the sentence of a Beach Grove Home care worker convicted of assaulting an elderly female resident with dementia.

Betty Soriano Bunagan, 55, a care worker at Beach Grove Home, was sentenced on Jan. 20 for assaulting an elderly female resident with dementia. The Crown Attorney's office is appealing Bunagan's sentence of a conditional discharge. - Terrence McEachern/SaltWire NetworkCHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. — The P.E.I. Crown Attorney's office has filed a notice to appeal the sentence of a Beach Grove Home care worker convicted of assaulting an elderly female resident with dementia.

At trial, Bunagan's co-worker, also a resident care worker , testified that one day in March 2019 in the afternoon, she assisted Bunagan with changing the woman into her pyjamas. The RCW and Bunagan were on each side of the woman in order to lift her out of a wheelchair and onto a toilet seat so she could be changed into her pyjamas. Bunagan appeared to be impatient, annoyed and in a rush, the RCW testified.

Defence lawyer Derek Bondt, who recommended a conditional or absolute discharge, said the experience of going through the court process and having the matter publicized in the media serves as a deterrent for Bunagan and others. Bondt also filed 24 letters of support for his client from past and present co-workers. Bunagan is originally from the Philippines and came to Canada in 1990. She worked as an RCW in Ontario prior to moving to P.E.I.

"There was no remorse. There was no taking responsibility for what she did. There was no acknowledging that she did anything wrong," Williams added."Mum was a human being and she wasn't treated like that."
