TORONTO — Prosecutors are telling a Toronto jury a man chose to make a series of manoeuvres with his car while plainclothes police officers were close by, hitting one of them and crushing the officer's body under the vehicle.
In his opening statement, Crown attorney Michael Cantlon told jurors the case is not about who struck Const. Jeffrey Northrup or what caused the officer's death, but rather the choices made by Umar Zameer that night and whether he knew Northrup was a police officer carrying out his duties.Northrup, 55, died on July 2, 2021, after being struck by a vehicle as he was responding to a report of a stabbing in the area of Toronto City Hall.
