Lawyers and business groups have been intensely lobbying a small number of state MPs ahead of a vote on 'game changing' reforms to legal class actions in Victoria. | EXCLUSIVE
But the Australian Industry Group, with the help of the Liberal opposition, has been working hard in the corridors of State Parliament on Spring Street, trying to convince the key undecided votes to knock back the reforms.Having "contingency fees" would allow lawyers to act like litigation funders and take a cut of settlement, rather than charging by the hour, in return for indemnifying the plaintiff for costs.
Mr Barton is a client of Maurice Blackburn’s – one of 7000 people who are part of a class action against Uber. They claim they are entitled to hundreds of millions of dollars in compensation for what they say was the illegal disruption of the taxi industry by the ride-share giant.
"It has been important to ensure that accurate information is available to all those deliberating about this legislation, particularly given the active misinformation campaign against the bill undertaken by corporate lobbyists such as the Australian Industry Group, Australian Institute of Company Directors, and the US Chamber of Commerce’s Institute for Legal Reform," the spokesman said.
"There's only one group that is going to make money from this and that's plaintiff lawyers," Mr Clark said.
