Croatia head coach felt disrespected by Canadian head coach John Herdman for his comment in a group huddle following a loss to Belgium.
“Canadians must have respect for us and this way of putting words together is not a sign of respect,” Dalic said through an interpreter. “We are the runners-up ; it wasn’t Brazil or Spain or any other country. We are the runners up, we were second in the world, we are worth of respect the way we played, the way we behave, the way we respect all others is the reason we are worthy or respect.
Shortly after becoming an independent country, Croatia went on to make it to the semifinal of the 1998 World Cup in France, losing to the host. They went on to finish third in the tournament. For his part, Herdman tried to downplay the controversy and looked to focus on the game. Canada must earn at least a point from the contest or risk being eliminated from advancing to the next round, dependant on what happens with Belgium and Morocco in the other group game.
Herdman said the controversy won’t affect the team’s preparation. They day before, Canadian defender Alistair Johnston, who will be joining Celtic FC in Scotland following the World Cup, said all the back and forth was good for generating interest in the game. It’s an important game for both teams and will likely draw a big global audience.
