Arts writer Mike Devlin picks his favourite upcoming events, including Mom’s the Wrod: Talkin’ Turkey at The Belfry Theatre Dec. 5-22.
Tickets: Pay What You Can through tickets.belfry.bc.ca
Why: The holiday-themed installment in the massively popular Mom’s the Word series spans 21 performances through Dec. 22 at the Belfry Theatre, so it will be a fast and furious pace for this laugh riot written by and starring Jill Daum, Alison Kelly, Robin Nichol, Barbara Pollard and Deborah Williams. There’s somewhat of a Christmas theme to this one — note the turkey reference — but this is comedy fit for all seasons.Tickets: $25 from takewarningevents.tickit.
Why: Big John Bates has been a fixture of the Victoria live music scene for more the better part of 25 years, even though he’s based out of Vancouver. His rockabilly rhythms and spitfire attitude are elements tailor-made for stages here and everywhere, and his first tour of Vancouver Island in five years will bring out the old-school punks who haven’t had much reason to celebrate of late.
