Astros' unflappable Cristian Javier says riches won't affect his wealth of talent
Delighted to enter spring training with a five-year, $64 million contract, righthander Cristian Javier limbers up during the first day of workouts for Astros pitchers and catchers at West Palm Beach, Fla.WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. — He wore a tan suit, shaded his eyes with a pair of Louis Vuitton sunglasses, and showcased a sort of swag few had seen from him. Cristian Javier earned his “El Reptil” nickame for never showing any emotion. Any attention he draws is almost accidental.
If Brown’s big promises become reality, remember Thursday as just a beginning. On his 21st day in charge, Houston’s first-year general manager made official a five-year, $64 million contract extension with Javier, cementing the 25-year-old righthander as a cornerstone of future Astros rotations. Negotiations between the Astros and Javier’s agent, Dan Lozano, predated Brown’s arrival. Brown credited assistant general manager Bill Firkus for “getting the ball rolling” during January’s deadline to exchange salary arbitration figures.
“Jim is definitely committed, and we thank him for his resources for a time like this,” Brown said. “It’s an exciting time for the fans, because I wanted to make sure, long term, that we secure these players so our sustained winning can keep moving forward. This is an important day and an exciting time for the fans because we’re trying to keep that winning going. And the only way to keep that winning going is to keep the players in-house.
