Tamara Lich and Chris Barber face charges of mischief, obstructing police, counselling others to commit mischief and intimidation for their role in organizing the three-week protest that took over the streets of downtown Ottawa last year.
The Canadian Press'Freedom Convoy' organizers Tamara Lich, left, and Chris Barber, right, make their way with lawyer Keith Wilson to the Public Order Emergency Commission, in Ottawa on Nov. 1, 2022. The pair are set to face a criminal trial on Tuesday.
Officers spent the next two days dislodging protesters from the streets around Parliament Hill. But that parting phrase, which would go on to become the title of Lich's recently published book, is likely to feature at the heart of her criminal trial. Big-rig trucks parked on downtown and residential streets, blocking traffic and blaring air horns at all hours in what became a weeks-long winter block party — complete with fireworks, a live stage, bouncy castles and, famously, an outdoor hot tub.
Lich testified before a federal inquiry last year that when she told supporters to "hold the line," she wasn't encouraging them to stay in the capital, but rather to "stay true to your values in the face of adversity."
