JOHN'S, N.L. — Police-reported crime in Newfoundland and Labrador has increased for the second year in a row, according to a recent report by Statistics Canada.
The province's rating took a dive to 69.56 in 2020, perhaps due to the social limitations of the COVID-19 pandemic, but has been climbing ever since. Unlike violent crime, which remained mostly stable from 2019 and into the early days of the pandemic in 2020, non-violent crime took a dip in 2020 but is now higher than 2019 levels. In a 2022 interview with SaltWire, Wilson spoke of the area as scary and nerve-wracking “no matter what time of day,” and said the city and province have not done enough to improve conditions.
“There has to be supports available when people leave the justice system and get out on bail … and the supervised housing that prevents them from returning to that life of crime, or at least gives them the best possible chances.” Cadigan said the RNC relies on residents to provide police with information, and practices that can help deter and prevent crime in the province.
