“So much of the time of the mounted police was taken up enforcing provincial laws that the police could not give the attention required in patrolling the districts settled by alien enemies, and other duties arising out of the war,” read the Feb. 5, 1917 edition ofA police checkpoint set up by members of the Alberta Provincial Police near Coleman, Alta.Mounties also struggled with enforcing Prohibition laws, which were popular in rural areas but much less so in cities.
The new service was initially unpopular due to its roles enforcing Prohibition laws and in labour disputes, including theOperating costs more than quadrupled and staffing became an early challenge as well. Nearly a third of the APP’s members resigned within its first year, prompting calls in the Alberta Legislature for an investigation.Article content
