CPO: Final concerts impress and entertains with pops, classics and star power yyc yycmusic

The soloist for the concerto was Branford Marsalis, the youngest member of the famous Marsalis family. Like his older brother trumpeter Wynton, Branford has built a remarkable career as a musician, impressive for his many performances as a classical saxophonist, composer and also a fine jazz performer.

The response to Marsalis’s performance was overwhelming, and an encore simply had to happen. Here, wearing his other musical cap, Marsalis’s performed a jazz standard in a New Orleans style, playing solo but drawing upon the improvised services of the CPO’s double bass player who had previously provided the jazz bass foundation of the concerto.

Even better were performances of the second half of the program devoted to the music of Ravel. The orchestra version of La Valse is not heard very frequently, and on this occasion was given the strongest, more convincing performance of the evening, the waltz rhythms nicely pointed, and the wild climax everything one could want. It was very warmly received, the applause conveying that it had heard something special.
