Cooper Rush should run for mayor of Frisco. Maybe Mansfield. Why not Dallas?Rush went 4-1 last season as Dak Prescott’s replacement as Prescott recovered from a fractured thumb. When the season was possibly headed into darkness,until Prescott returned. The Cowboys’ fan base loved Rush for his work. It raised questions about whether this franchise is better off with Rush at quarterback than Prescott.
And while there was a thought Rush would cash in on the free agent market with a new place of employment, it was revealed Friday . Rush signed a two-year deal worth $6 million with $2.75 million guaranteed for the 2023 season, a person with knowledge of the contract said.Rush’s journey as Prescott’s backup was almost derailed in training camp last summer when Will Grier challenged to take over the No. 2 gig. Grier suffered a groin injury, and Rush took advantage of that opening. He earned the No. 2 spot, and after Prescott’s injury in the 2022 season opener, he proved his value.
In the five starts, Rush completed 58% of his passes for 956 yards with five touchdowns, three interceptions and an 81.2 quarterback rating. Rush went 2-1 in road starts and 2-1 in the NFC East. He didn’t throw an interception until the end of his reign when he threw three picks in a road loss against Philadelphia.As we entered free agency, Rush had those five games as proof he could play in this league -- even Cowboys’ officials were doubtful he would return.
