Part of what inspired the play selection was a call the Jaguars made in a game they eventually lost.
McCarthy was right in the sense that with 14 seconds left on the clock, the Jaguars went with a draw play, quickly got back to the line of scrimmage and spiked the ball before the game clock ran out. However, not only was the field positioning different -- Jacksonville started that play on its own 41-yard line and ended at Minnesota’s 44-yard line -- but the plan there was simply to set up the team for a field goal .
McCarthy also said that in practice the Cowboys got the process of running the play and spiking the ball down to 13 seconds. Why, then, would a team run a play that gives themselves only one second of wiggle room in a sport as chaotic as football?
