What does a retired rural dweller, gardener and woodlot owner do when the doctor's orders are to lift nothing heavier than a thick book for the next six weeks? Even a billet of stove-wood is heavier than that. So, for that matter, is an axe, a shovel, a garden hoe, never mind a power saw. In practical terms, this means no wood fires either, even though mid-April here can be dank and chilly with Fundy fogs. The wood heat feels SO good.
I did like washing dishes. When the kids were small, the sudsy kitchen sink was among the few places where we could share the day's news in peace. But these days, she prefers washing them herself. “It relaxes me,” she says. Not for me, not now anyway. These days I didn't even need to get up to piss. As I slept, my water drained into a plastic overnight leg bag. Come morning, I disconnected, emptied, washed and rinsed it before strapping on my smaller daytime rig. Both would be standard wear for several weeks yet.
