ContributedBear with me, dear reader --because two more Saunders bear stories have surfaced, one from a B.C. nephew--where, incidentally, wildfire-ousted bears are raiding urban waste bins--and one rescued from my late mother Winnifred. The first story I'd often heard; but nephew Derek, who'd heard it fresh from his father, was able to fill in some missing details. And the second story was a family joke.
Here's Derek with the details: “Granddad then steered for shore and, grabbing a stranded stick of pulpwood, waded forward into deeper water--where the bear would have no footing to fight back--and smashed it on the head with all his strength. So, canoeing home one fall, picturing Winnie's pies, my father stopped at a good blueberry patch. Hunkered down, picking away, he got the feeling he wasn't alone. Then he saw, not 10 metres away, a big black bear hungrily doing the same. This time, since it was hunting season, in hopes of bagging a caribou or a moose, Dad had his rifle handy.
