The COVID-19 pandemic has seen multiple lockdowns in multiple countries as governments have tried to limit transmission – and a new study uses those lockdowns to look at how we experience isolation and feelings of loneliness.

For some people, it can be damaging to their mental and physical health; for others, the chance to have their own space and personal time is a real positive.

The study involved 70 participants aged between 17 and 73, and it highlights the need to look at loneliness across generations.

The study volunteers answered a series of open questions about lockdown and their responses to it – including high and low points – and their use of social media. While they weren't asked to write about being alone specifically, the topic often came up.In addition, the participants were asked to indicate how often they felt lonely during lockdown: never, rarely, sometimes , or often.
