Afghan journalist Muzhgan Samarqandi has written an open letter regarding the case of Charlotte Bellis, a New Zealand journalist who says she was forced to return to Afghanistan after becoming pregnant in Qatar – where being pregnant and unmarried is illegal – after failing to secure an emergency spot in one of New Zealand’s quarantine hotels. She writes: Charlotte says the Taliban have given her a safe haven when she is not welcome in her own country.
