SNIFFER DOGS can be trained to accurately detect travellers infected with SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19, with potential applications at airports and other transit hubs.
In their study, infectious disease specialist Professor Anu Kantele of the University of Helsinki and her colleagues trained four sniffer dogs — who had experience detecting either cancer, dangerous goods or illicit drugs — to sniff out coronavirus.
