Based on expert advice, we’ve retooled it to focus on the stats that matter most in 2023: hospitalizations, variants and booster rates. We’ll also be adding wastewater data in the coming weeks.
Now for the bad news: COVID hospitalizations are still on the rise. More than 520 New Yorkers are currently hospitalized with COVID, up from 150 in the beginning of the summer.data shows that the concentration of the virus in sewage is also ticking up, although recent reporting by New York City is a bit spotty.
The XBB.1.5 subvariant, which dominated in our region for much of this year, continues to lose ground to other strains — most notably its fellow omicron descendant EG.5 . The new BA.2.86 variant has arrived in New York City. A new COVID booster is due out this fall, but only a small segment of the population has opted to get the last iteration — meaning that most New Yorkers aren’t up-to-date on their vaccines. The shots are important for avoiding severe disease.
