COVID-19: Canfor to close Prince George sawmill as disease and supply problems hit

“The closure is a result of an insufficient supply of economically viable timber following the mountain pine beetle epidemic, coupled with the major global economic downturn as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic,” the statement read.

The company will also curtail operations for a month at its two Prince George pulp mills starting July 6, 2020. This will affect 640 workers. Canfor CEO Don Kayne said the company would try to move workers to other sites. Canfor operates 11 sawmills, four pulp mills and one paper mill in B.C. Canfor closed the North Central Plywood plant in Prince George in 2008, a sawmill in Quesnel in 2014 and closed its Vavenby sawmill and sold those timber rights to Interfor in July, 2019.
