“It just goes to show that hard work pays off,” added Johnson, the former professional boxer and heavyweight contender who’s 20 months younger than his cousin Dwayne. “Any example we want to show to the community, we want to let them know that yes, hard work does pay off and one day you can get to that big step in your life.”
Provo was an all-conference defensive back with the Huskies who was drafted in the first round by the Saskatchewan Roughriders in 1995. He was invited to the Patriots’ training camp that year and two seasons later, when he was on the verge of making the final roster before suffering a calf injury late in camp.
Johnson, a five-time Canadian amateur heavyweight champion and former junior world amateur heavyweight champion, competed at the 1992 Olympics in Barcelona before turning pro a year later. Johnson was ranked among the top 10 heavyweights in the world over a three-year span. He fought for the WBA title in 2002, losing to John Ruiz on a 10th-round disqualification.
“My father didn’t want us to get shuffled up in the crowd and do things that would get you in trouble or with those little school gangs or whatever. My father wanted us to be positive and he thought getting us into boxing would help us stay in shape, physically and mentally, and have a disciplined mind.
