A Quebec court ruled in favor of preserving a First World War fort from residential development.
The Quebec Superior Court ruled against a real estate development company that sought to remove the heritage status of First World War fortifications overlooking the St. Lawrence River east of Quebec City. Justice Denis Jacques stated that the public interest in preserving the cultural heritage of Fort Beaumont surpasses the private interest of the company.
The battery, a fortification for heavy guns, was constructed in 1914 to safeguard Canadian troops as part of a coastal defense system for the global war that began in Europe. In 2009 and 2012, Gestion Breton Martineau acquired the land where the fort's remnants stand, aiming to build residences. In 2022, the company filed a $2.09-million lawsuit against the municipality of Beaumont and Quebec's Culture Department to hinder their efforts to protect the site from development. Despite the lawsuit, Quebec's Culture Department granted the fort heritage status in 2023, a decision upheld by Monday's court ruling
