This is the first time that the awards will be held in Calgary. When the venue in Red Deer was not available this year, organizers decided it was time to move the awards to a bigger centre to accommodate what is hoped will be the continued growth of the event. The plans are to alternate between Calgary and Edmonton from now on.
The St. Albert singer-songwriter is a shining example of how Alberta’s country scene often offers support and development within its ranks for young artists. In 2020, when Benedict’s Wanted You To climbed to the Top 30 on the country charts — a rarity for an independent artist — she and her mom sought the counsel of fellow St. Albert native Aaron Goodvin about their next move and eventually signed with Goodvin’s management company.
This is why the Country Music Alberta Awards have a focus on up-and-coming performers, which is why there are five “Horizon” categories in the mix alongside nods for Female Artist of the Year and Male Artist of the Year
