Unconventional use of humor and toy props made math come alive thanks to extraordinary high school teacher, Mr. Davis.
A belated thank you for your service, Mr. Davis. You did one heck of a job. You took the most boring class in high school for many students — math — and made it come alive.
It worked. They learned and they remembered. And now, at age 93 — 32 years after you retired from Birmingham High — nearly 100 of your former math students through the years are throwing you a big party to say thank you, and let you know the impact you made on their lives.Larry Davis came to Birmingham High School in Van Nuys in 1958 — a veteran of the Korean War era. He stayed for 33 years until he retired in 1991.
His strong suit was motivation. You can have all the knowledge in the world as a teacher, but if you can’t motivate your students, you get an F in math. The RSVP list is nearing 100 so far, and if you had a class with Mr. Davis and want to join in, send an email to [email protected]. “Those were the times you could do Europe on $5 a day, and here I was in Europe,” he said. “I wrote my parents and told them I was going to buy a scooter and tour Europe. My mother wrote back asking me to find out what a VW cost so they could send me the money. You’re not riding a scooter around Europe, she said. Those months on the road helped shape him as a teacher. He listened, he learned, and he laughed. There was no language barrier in laughter. It was accepted everywhere he went.
